The bar in the fashion and modeling industry has been set to an all-time high, but let rookie standout Kayla Simmons tell you – bars are set to be broken. While most young models breaking into the industry fall victim to the dreaded “popularity over money” curse, the soon-to-be 20 year old has already watched and learned from many others mistakes, making her one to watch for 2008.
When did you first figure out that you wanted to become a model?
I’ve enjoyed being in front of the camera my entire life. I didn’t become interested in art of modeling however until high school. Shows like America’s Next Top Model really encouraged me to take my interest in modeling seriously.
What was the first thing you noticed that was different doing a photo shoot as opposed to what you thought the process might be?
I had always assumed that doing a photo shoot was just like posing in the bathroom mirror, simple and easy. When I actually experienced the process, I noticed early on that models are affected by the setting and need to be in tune with the camera despite whatever distractions are going on.
You gotta tell us – what’s life like living in Reading, PA?
Life in Reading is really slow paced. I’ve lived here most of my life so it’s home, though I do plan on moving to a larger city in the future. Despite the fact that not alot goes on for the younger crowd, it’s a great place to grow up.
Since you’re near Philadelphia, take us on a journey through the social scene out there.
Philly is where most of us Reading young people go for night life activities. There’s always different affairs going on each weekend, whether it be greek affiliated or just another club party. It goes down in a major way. Besides clubs and parties, Philly is well known for its cultural festivities as well.
Do you feel any pressure going into working with a company with such veteran names and established super models being a rookie? I’m very conscious of the fact that the company is well established with superb models, which only encourages me to perfect my game. Pressure can either make or break a person, my objective is to not be broken.
We’re sure you don’t plan on doing modeling forever. What’s your eventual plans in the future?
I’m currently in school, a sophomore at Lincoln University. I’m majoring in business because I eventually would like to be a successful entrepreneur and business owner.
Last question: the south has alot of dances right now going on in hip-hop – which dance are you currently doing right now?
The south is doing it’s thing with the dances right now; I think “crank that” by Soulja Boy is very hot! I’ve been working on it for a minute.
